Virtualization Industry Predictions

4 million virtual machines expected by 2009, 611 million virtualized PCs by 2011 and the IT infrastructure and operations deeply impacted by virtualization by 2012

In May 2007 Gartner was predicting that the total number of deployed virtual machines would reach 3 million by 2009, and that virtualization would be part of nearly every aspect of IT by 2015.

In details Gartner now expects 4 million VMs by 2009, 611 million virtualized PCs by 2011 and the IT infrastructure and operations deeply impacted by virtualization by 2012.

The above two statements clearly depicts how the analysis firm changed its mind and expected the overall rapid impact virtualization is causing to the industry.

  • Through 2010, all facets of IT Virtualization will see substantial enhancements in functionality and performance; however the most significant enhancements will be in microprocessor, hypervisor and operating system function for Server Virtualization.

  • Through 2010, Server Virtualization will have the single largest impact on budgets for IT hardware and support. The second largest impact will be network virtualization.
  • Through 2010, three vendors -- Cisco, VMware and XenSource (now Citrix) -- will dominate IT Virtualization, accounting for 60 percent of all new virtualization deployments.


Virtualized servers to reach 45% of the market share in India by the end of 2008.

IDC India has predicted that the share of virtualized servers will become double by the end of 2008. The current share of 22 % is expected to rise to 45 % by this year end. Storage and server virtualization will be of main factor in this growth




Virtualization market to reach $1.35 billion by 2010
